2019-20 HPTP Coaches' Statements

The coaches for the Waterloo Ravens’ 2019-20 HPTP Program are:

Midget AA - Darrell Husk

Midget AA Players and Parents,

My name is Darrell Husk and I am again excited to be coaching the Midget AA team in Waterloo. I will commit to the team in every way and I am looking for players that understand the commitment that goes with playing at the elite level that MAA is and equally understand the importance of being a great teammate. You must show up at the rink willing to work hard and wanting to improve every time you hit the ice.

At the MAA level, it will my intention to offer as much exposure and opportunity for those wanting to further their hockey goals. As coaches and teammates, we will equally respect that some of our teammates may have a different plan for their future but love the elite level of competition, the atmosphere and camaraderie of MAA hockey. Regardless of the motivation all players must agree to a commitment, team first attitude and have immense respect their coaches and teammates. Our “team code” will be discussed and help guide us in creating the TEAM CULTURE that will make us successful in competition, develop better as players and guarantee a fun, enjoyable season for all, ultimately our goal.

I look forward to another season of MAA hockey, leading, teaching and challenging these incredible athletes to be better as players, individuals and even better as a team. The inception of our HPTP (high performance training program) will be exciting for our players and coaches as guidance and development opportunities from experts in their field will be an integral part of the season plan.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO TRY-OUT FOR THE TEAM, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!  Information such as preferred position F or D (comfortable with both), shooting hand, hometown and current team and playing level should be included among anything else you would like to add. I will be looking at players up until our tryouts begin and would welcome the opportunity to see you play and possibly meet prior to tryouts.

Players or Parents, email me at [email protected] or call/text 519-778-0788.

Darrell Husk

Coach, Waterloo Ravens Midget AA

Bantam AA - David Morrow

My name is David Morrow and I am very excited to be the 2019 – 2020 Waterloo Ravens Bantam AA Head Coach. Although this season is not over, plans for next year are underway and the coaching staff and I are excited about building a highly competitive team within our new High Performance Training Program (HPTP).

I have 30 years of coaching experience in both boys and girls hockey and I am HP1 Certified. For approximately the past 14 years I have been involved with the Waterloo Girls Minor Hockey Association as a parent, member of the Board, assistant coach and head coach at both the AA and A levels. I am passionate about the sport and I am committed to help players to develop to their fullest potential on and off of the ice.

As a coach I set high standards for myself and I expect the same of my bench staff. My bench and goaltending coaching staff for the 2019 – 2020 season will be announced shortly.  Jory Elliott is leading the HPTP goaltending program and will be on ice with all teams including ours at times and will help guide our goaltending training in all aspects - Jory is presently the Assistant Coach and Goalie Coach with the University of Waterloo’s Women’s Varsity Hockey Team.

I want to take this opportunity to direct all players interested in trying out for the team to the December 21st HPTP-High Performance Training Program for AA/A news article posted on this website. In this article you will learn more about the program and the support that our team will have from our PWHL KW-Rangers Coaching Staff and the University of Waterloo Coaching staff including Shaun Reagan (Head Coach Women’s Varsity Hockey), Brian Bourque (Head Coach Men’s Varsity Hockey), Laura McIntyre (Assistant Coach Women’s Varsity Hockey), Ben Fanelli (Assistant Coach Men’s Varsity Hockey), and Andrew Hopf (Conditioning Coach, Men’s Varsity Hockey).

What is the Bantam AA Coaching Staff Looking for in a Bantam AA player?

  • Hockey players that have a passion to play highly competitive hockey and aspire to play at the next level;

  • Hockey players with a strong work ethic and commitment to improvement on and off the ice;

  • Hockey players that are committed to the sport and the team for the entirety of the season;

  • Athleticism, individual skill, hockey sense and hockey knowledge;

  • Good communication skills;

  • Focus and positive response to feedback; and

  • Community Involvement/Focus: Excellent representative of the Waterloo Raven’s organization.

What Can You Do Before Try-Outs Begin?

If you are thinking about trying out for this team, reach out and contact me: via call/text 226-218-0014 or email [email protected] so that I and the coaching staff know some things about who you are and so that you have an opportunity to ask questions of us about the team and our season plan. I know it can be difficult to reach out, but please do because taking risks and communication will be vital to our success as a team!

If you do reach out, please be prepared to tell me about the following:

  • Who you are and where you are from;

  • Your preferred position;

  • What side you shoot from: Left or right-handed shot;

  • Goalies: Block and Glove hand; and

  • Your best hopes for the 2019-20 Season!
