Waterloo Fall Challene Cup
The Novice A Ravens fall in overtime to Etobicoke Dolphins in the bronze medal game at the Waterloo Fall Challenge Cup.

In a hard fought battle, the Novice A Ravens fell 2-1 to the Etobiocke Dolphins in the bronze medal game at the Waterloo Fall Challenge Cup.  After a see-saw first period, Etobicoke took the lead at the 2:56 mark of the first period.  Waterloo tied things up in the second period on a goal by Avery C with assists going to Allie S and Faye K.  The third period saw end to end action with both teams having several fighting for the go ahead goal but both goalies were up to the task.  Waterloo outshot the visiting Dolphins 7 to 2 in the third but could not get one past the Dolphins netminder.  As the buzzer brought the third period to a close, we were headed to a sudden-death 3 on 3 overtime with changes only allowed on the fly.  After an icing call against Etobicoke, the face off was won by the Dolphins and shot down the ice.  The Dolphin player was able to catch up to the puck before it went over the goal line for another icing call.  She came around the net where her attempt was stopped.  However she was able to pick up the rebound and had the patience to wait to make it around our goalie and shot the puck into the open net to win a very exciting game.  The girls played their hearts out and as the Etobicoke coach said after the game, the game could have gone either way.  It was two equally matched teams, both playing at their best to put on a show for all the spectators.  Congratulations!

Even though the girls lost the bronze medal game, they had a terrific weekend.  It all started on Thursday night with a very difficult loss to the Cambridge Roadrunners 2-0.  We were able to shut down Cambridge's star player but not the rest of the team.

The girls were back at it on Friday afternoon playing the North York Storm.  Coach Bill's extended pre-game speech seemed to have paid dividends as the girls came out on fire.  Two goals by Ava M and solid goaltending by Caitlyn H gave Waterloo a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.  The fire continued to burned strong as Ava M completed a natural hattrick with a goal midway through the second period with an assist from Sage G.  Dana C added another to maintained the 2 goal lead after 2 period.  With two more goals by Ava M in the third period which made it a 5 goal performance, it was too much for North York.  Waterloo won the game 6-3 to even their record at 1-1.

Game 3 was an early start on Saturday morning.  A little groggy, the girls were at the rink and ready to play for their 8 am start against the Whitby Wolves.  The first period was a tight affair with Whitby dominating the play.  They outshot the Ravens 8-1 in the first period.  However, Waterloo was able to draw first blood with a goal by Ava M with an assist to Dana C early in the second period.  Whitby continued to dominate the play and outshot the Ravens in the second period by a count of 5-1.  The stellar goaltending duo of Caithlyn H and Shea H maintained the lead for the Ravens.  Into the third period, the pressure from Whtiby continued.  Mid way through the third period, Whitby was able to tie the game up at 1-1 and that is how the game ended.  With Whitby outshooting Waterloo 17-3, Waterloo was lucky to escape with a tie.  Congratulations go to the strong goaltending and defensive play.  Record after three games 1-1-1 which placed Waterloo second in Pool A.

Game 4 was a crossover game with Clarington Flames in Pool B.  With a victory, Waterloo would advance to the Bronze medal game.  There was no doubt that the girls wanted a game on Sunday.  After taking a 2-1 lead in the first period on two goals by Ava M, Emma K and Kayla S each added goals in the second period to take Waterloo to a 4-1 lead after two period.  Assists went to Paige J, Emma K and Kate M on the two second period goals.  There was no doubt that the Ravens would play Sunday.  With strong goaltending by Caitlyn H and Shea H yet again, Ava M added an empty net goal to cement the 5-1 victory and the Waterloo Novice A Ravens were off to the Bronze medal game.
