On September 30th, WGHA proudly hosted
Breaking
the Ice, a Mental Health Awareness event that brought together
athletes, families, and coaches to focus on female athletes and the psychology
of sport.
The evening featured a powerful panel of experts, Dr. Kim
Dawson, Haley Baxter (PhD candidate), Katie Greenway (Director Female Hockey/Hockey Canada and WGHA Goalie Development Lead), and Dr. Alison Yeung, MD,
who shared valuable insights on:
- The
impact of smartphones on mental wellness
- Staying
connected to sport when transitioning from elite athlete to volunteer
- Coaching
female athletes with a focus on mental health
- Parenting
and supporting the emotional development of young female athletes
With more than 180 coaches, athletes, and parents in
attendance, the event was a tremendous success. It sparked meaningful
conversations and set a positive tone for the season, one where we continue to
champion not only excellence on the ice, but also wellness and balance off the
ice.
Mental health is an important topic for all young athletes,
and WGHA is proud to be taking a leadership role in our community by making it
a priority. Events like Breaking the Ice show our commitment to supporting our
athletes and families in every part of their journey.
Heartfelt thanks to all our committee members, volunteers,
presenters, athletes, coaches, and families for your incredible support and
participation!
