Waterloo Cup 2025 - OT-rific!
Could it be possible that every Waterloo Cup final match, U7, U9, U11, U13, U15, and U18 went to overtime? YES! In what may be the most incredible Waterloo Cup matches ever, every final went to overtime. It began Saturday morning when U7-1 vs U7-2, which play non-competitive half-ice, played 10 minutes of overtime for fun to finish off the season. It seemed to foreshadow the rest of the games...
Waterloo Cup 2025 Games:
U7-1 @ U7-2 Played a half-ice game with a fun overtime added. 0-0
U9-2 @ U9-1 After a terrific Skills Event Friday night, both teams met in a season finale showdown. U9-1 was up 2-0 when U9-2, in a quick flurry, netted 3 goals to take the lead. U9-1 tied it late and overtime was needed. U9-2 prevailed in OT 4-3.
U11-3 @ U11-1 Round Robin winners met in the final. Lots of shots in a see-saw battle that ended 2-2 in regulation. 3 on 3 OT saw U11-3 complete the comeback winning the final 3-2.
U13-1 @ U13-2 2-game series with OT, if needed, as game 3. Game 1 saw a tight 1-0 win for U13-1. Game 2 saw U13-2 come out fast with a 2-0 lead in the first period. U13-1 tried to claw back but could only net one for a 2-1 loss. This meant OT was needed for "Game 3" so the scoreboard was reset. U13-2 scored in the 3 on 3 OT for the gold.
U15-2 @ U15-1 2-game series with OT, if needed, as game 3. Game 1 was a 4-0 win for U15-1. Game 2 flipped with U15-2 winning 2-0. OT "Game 3" was needed to break the series tie. Incredible goaltending on both sides saw 3 on 3 OT end and a shootout was needed. It was a goalie clinic as only 3 goals were scored in the shootout. The first shot by each team went in, then not another until the 14th shooter scored the winner for U15-2! The clang of the post was heard 3x as a reminder of the goaltender's "best friend."
U18-3 @ U18-2 met in the final after having just showed down in the KGLL semi-final. The last game of the 2025 Waterloo Cup couldn't possibly live up to the game just witnessed by the somewhat packed East-side of the WMRC, could it? Well holy moly... U18-2 goes up 2-0. U18-3 claws back with ever increasing pressure and by the end of the 2nd period they have taken the lead 3-2. The 3rd seemed to be scripted for the victory with no scoring until U18-2 buried a rebound with 3.1 seconds left in the game! "Overtime again!" was the referee's exclamation after a long day of long games. But this one ended early when U18-2 picked off a pass in their defensive zone that resulted in a breakaway goal. 4-3 final for U18-2.
It was a fun Waterloo Cup, with toques for the players, mini-sticks for the kids, and memories for all.
