Organization - 2020/2021 Import, Team Size and player Return to WGMHA changes
Submitted By LMC on Monday, March 9, 2020
Please be advised that the League Management Committee (LMC) of the WGMHA has been working towards revisions of some policies that are contained within the Manual of Operations for WGMHA. The Manual of Operations is being updated now, and we expect final policy wording to be posted by the end of March. In the meantime we want to communicate the changes that the WGMHA Board has approved to date:

Effective the 2020/2021 season ( i.e beginning with Spring Try-outs):

1. Import and Non-Import definitions:

a) A Non-Import is a player who lives at an address within the city of Waterloo.  Where a player has two addresses, such as in the case of joint custody, one address must be in the City of Waterloo. Year after year these players remain “Non-Imports” unless an event (see #2 below) occurs that results in a  re-classification of player status. The “event” may result in a player who resides in the City of Waterloo being re-classified.

b) Non-Import status may be obtained for a player who resides outside of the City of Waterloo, by applying to and being approved by the WGMHA Board of Directors. Applications can only be made during or after the players second consecutive season registered with WGMHA.

c) Players not meeting the criteria above are classified as Imports.

2. WGMHA departure and return eligibility:

a) Non-Import players released from a specific Division and Level in the WGMHA who then choose to request a release and play in another centre at the level of release or at a higher level will remain categorized as a non-import (unless stipulated otherwise by the WGMHA Board) for the purposes of a future return to the WGMHA

b) Players offered positions at a specific Division and Level in the WGMHA who choose to request a release and play in another centre at that level or lower will be re-categorized as an Import (regardless of address) for the purposes of a future return to the WGMHA.

Please note: Previous WGMHA players with current Waterloo addresses who left for the 19/20 (or earlier) season(s) and return for the 20/21 season will be treated as Non-Import players in 20/21.

3. Import Allowances:
While no specific increases are being made to overall import allowances by Division and Level, if a tier 1 (AA) team does not use all its allotted imports, those imports spaces will be made available to the same-Division tier 2 (A typically) team, but only for minor-year players.

4. Additional Imports:
Tier 1 (AA) and Tier 2 (A) teams may be granted one additional import over their primary allocation by the LMC if recommended by the coach and an independent evaluator for reasons of competitiveness. Additional import requests will require explicit board approval.

5. Roster size:
Certain teams may be granted the right to carry rosters greater than or less than 17 under certain conditions and as recommended by the coach, agreed upon by the LMC,and as allowed by the OWHA.
