Gold Weekend in Orillia
Submitted By Jeffrey Butt on Monday, January 14, 2013
The following weekend summary comes from 1 of our 6 unsung hero’s playing defence (who choses not mention her own efforts):

The Orillia Hawks Tournament

Friday, the first day of the tournament.  We get to miss school!  Our first game is against North Bay Ice Bolts.  They look tough.   We sign in, do warm up, get dressed.  When we get on the ice we do warm up.  The other team is going to be stiff competition.  A few minutes into the first period, they score a goal.  Near the end of the first period, they score again, 2-0 them.  Now we really had to be on fire.  In the second period, we score 2 goals, both on power plays.  2-2.  In the 3rd period, 26 seconds left, Grace scores a goal with a hard shot from the point.  Way to go Grace!  We win our first game!  The second game we play North Simcoe.  They have a big goalie.  We win again, the goalies get a shut out, and we don’t have to play Saturday!

On our day off, people go skiing and swimming at the resort.  At 3 pm, we all meet at the tubing hill.  We go down in straight lines together, hanging on to each other’s feet and in a big circle, hanging on to each other’s tubes. We get spun super fast and we are laughing so much, I have tears coming out of my eyes.  It could also be because of how fast we are going down the hill.  Later we have a potluck and watch a movie.

It’s Sunday.  The day of the semi-finals and finals (if we make it).  We are playing North Bay again.  At the end of the second period, it is still 0-0.  We are working hard and our back checking is spot on.  In the 3rd, Lauren scores top shelf.  1-0!  It stays like that for the rest of the game.  We win.  Our goalies get a shut out again and we are going to the finals!

1:00 pm.  The start of the finals against Wilmot.  We hope it’s not like our other tournaments where we come in second all the time.  At the end of the 1st period it’s 0-0.  It’s a good game so far.  In the 2nd period, Reese and Sam H are on a break away, 2 on 1.  Sam H skates with the puck on the outside, passes it to Reese in the middle, Reese chips it over the goalie’s shoulder.  An AMAZING goal!  Best I’ve ever seen.  1-0.  They score right after to tie it up.  In the 3rd period, Ashley scores on a rebound.  One of our players shoot it from the corner, goalie saves it.  Puck is near the corner of the crease, Ashley skates to it and jams it in, 2-1.  4 minutes left.  Everyone wanted to keep it that way so we play as hard as we can.  We come out with a GOLD!  Finally.  We get our medals and take pictures.  We worked super hard and all of our hard work payed off.

And I got to have my first beaver tail smothered in chocolate and I can’t wait for my second!
